Understanding SSS Disability Benefits

SSS provides disability benefits to members who become permanently disabled and unable to work. The benefit amount depends on your contribution history and the type/extent of your disability.

36-Month Threshold: If you have 36 or more monthly contributions, you receive a monthly pension. With fewer than 36 contributions, you receive a lump sum payment instead.

Types of Disability

Permanent Total Disability

Complete inability to perform any gainful occupation. Examples include:

  • Complete and permanent loss of sight in both eyes
  • Loss of two limbs at or above the ankle or wrist
  • Permanent complete paralysis of two limbs
  • Brain injury resulting in incurable mental disability
  • Other conditions deemed total and permanent by SSS

Permanent Partial Disability

Partial loss of work capacity. Benefit is based on percentage assessed by SSS. Examples include:

  • Loss of one thumb, finger, or toe
  • Partial hearing or vision loss
  • Loss of one limb below ankle or wrist
  • Other partial impairments

What is the difference between permanent total and partial disability?
